The Steamer Virginia V is a 122 foot steam-powered passenger
vessel,built in 1922 at Maplewood,north of Gig Harbour on the South Kitsap Peninsula, and was launched on March 9,1922. (She recently celebrated her 80th.birthday) |

She origionally provided passenger and freight service between Seattle
and Tacoma for small communities along Colvos Passage as many other privately owned vessels of Puget Sounds "Mosquito Fleet",the precursor to the Washington State Ferry System. |

The Virginia V is the sole steam-powered survivor of the "Mosquito
Fleet" and is one of only two operating steam-powered,wooden-hull passenger ships surviving in the United States today. (The other vessel is the Sabino,operated by Mystic Seaport in Mystic,CT)
Designated a Seattle City Landmark in 1974 and a Tacoma City
Landmark in 1998, The Virginia V was recognized as a National Historic Landmark on October 5 1992. |
